Business owners, if you haven’t started already, now is the time to build your digital presence.

You might be good or even great at what you do, but if you are not taking advantage of today’s online marketing methods, you are missing out on customers who would have chosen your services if only they could have found you online.

Some of you may not know where to start, some of you may want to make sure you have everything covered. Here is my checklist for building a strong digital presence.

Set yourself up with a Google Business Profile

An easy to set up and important part of your digital presence. Your Google Business Profile allows potential customers to see reviews, trusted testimonials, photos, contact details, your website and more in one place. I believe every business owner should start here when it comes to their digital presence.

To set this up, search “Google Business Profile” and follow the steps. If you have any trouble with this, feel free to get in touch with us here, let us know you read the article and we will help you get it set up. No fee, no obligation. I just like giving business owners a hand with the small things.

Take advantage of social media

It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you are not using social media in today’s digital world you are falling behind.

You don’t need to create a profile on every single platform. Focus on the ones that are relevant to your business and, more importantly, your target market. For example, if you are a tradie, Instagram may be a better fit than LinkedIn. Have a look around at what works in your industry. If you need advice, I am always open for a consult.

Use a professional business email

Set yourself up with a professional business email. For example, you will find me on harry.roadley@digitalroads.agency. Now imagine receiving an email about your digital presence from that address compared to harry@hotmail.com. Big difference. A professional email builds trust, and trust is everything when it comes to turning people into customers.

You can usually set up a business email when purchasing a website domain or through Google Workspace. You will need a web domain to do this, which leads me onto the next point.

The big one: a website

The holy grail of your digital presence. A website is a living, breathing thing. Too many people underestimate it, but that should excite you. Your website is where you control what people see, it runs 24/7, and it can bring in customers while you are doing literally anything else.

Websites can always be updated and improved. You can promote new things, test variations, and make changes whenever you need. A polished, easy to use website signals a trustworthy business. On the other hand, an old, clunky one screams “scam” and sends people running. Make the decision of how you want to put your business forward into the world.

Interact with your industry

Do not be afraid to interact in comment sections or connect with others in your industry online. It is a great organic way to build your brand and grow a following.

This will look different across industries. Builders, for example, might comment on Instagram posts of other people’s work or even on DIY projects. You can decide on the tone that suits you best. Maybe it is educational, maybe it is positive encouragement. Either way, it builds your voice and presence online.

Beyond all these points

Your digital presence can expand further with more powerful techniques such as email marketing, paid advertising, search optimisation, and the content you choose to put out into the world. But that is a conversation for another day.

Follow this checklist and your business will be well on its way to a strong digital presence that puts you ahead of your competitors.

If you ever want to talk about your digital presence with a professional, Digital Roads’ doors are always open.
